Description
Pilgrimages started around the turn of the last millennium. Starting in Germany, the pilgrims traveled via Konstanz - Amilkon - Fischingen to Einsiedeln, continuing on to Rome or Santiago de Compostela to the grave of Stain James. Witnesses of such «Gottzfarten» (God's travels) are churches or chapels dedicated to Saint James, former pilgrim hostels or the emblem of the shell. In the Thurgau, the former Pilgrim trail is also called Swabian Trail. The trail is marked. If the trail followed its historic line, today's hikers would have to travel on highly frequented roads. Substitution routes had to be created. The witnesses of the pilgrims' time, however, were considered as fixed points along the way. The 42 km part of the trail shows the Canton of Thurgau from its most beautiful side.
