Beaver Trail in Pfyn

Thurgau

Thurgau

Distance 5 km
Duration 3 hours
Description
After the ice ages and long before the human population, the beaver settled in the Thur valley where it has been felling trees ever since, building dams and undercutting bluffs. After its extinction in the 19th century and its resettlement at the Nussbaumen lakes by the WWF Bodensee/Thurgau 35 years ago, the beaver today lives again in the plains of the Thur. The recent history of the beaver is a successful one.

Approximately 450 beavers live in Switzerland today, some 100 in the Thurgau. According to estimations of the biologist and beaver expert Mathis Müller-Buser from Pfyn, approximately a third of the Thurgau beaver population lives around the Pfyn beaver trail. It is, however, doubtful if you will see a beaver on the trail right away, since the animals are primarily nocturnal and hardly appear before dusk. If you want to observe beavers after dusk, there are good chances to find more than nip traces and beaver caves along the beaver trail. The beaver's traces are highly visible and often appear in unexpected places.

The beaver trail leads you through different habitats and several beaver territories in the Pfyn region. The beaver requires a network of flowing watercourse and natural landscape corridors to survive long-term. Along the factory channel, twelve information panels made of oak boards comprehensively inform you about the habits of the largest native rodent.

The project was financed thanks to runners of the WWF run 2001 as well as thanks to many further sponsors. This beaver trail - built in the international year of Freshwater - aims at bringing the beaver and its habitat closer to us.
